Conch Reef

If you want to snorkel Florida or take a deep scuba dive then Conch Reef is the ideal place.

Located 6 miles south of Tavern Key, this horseshoe shaped reef varies from its rich shallow coral reefs of 15-20ft to depths of 100ft where it reaches the sandy bottom in the deepest parts.

This reef which is abundant with marine life is one of the better-developed reefs in the area and has some of the most colorful coral to be seen. With Seafans, and various coral including 5ft high Barrel Sponges this is a well-developed area.

With Searods, Pillar coral, Barrel sponges, Whips and gorgonians this is truly a remarkable dive site and the Aquarius Underwater Habitat is located here at this reef surrounded by large and small fish such as Tarpon and Jacks.

Conch Reef derives its name from the large numbers of Queen Conch that frequent these sand and grass areas around the reef.

One of the fun elements at this reef is that when the strong currents are favorable it is possible to drift dive.

One of the attractions of Florida Key scuba diving is that you will be able to take underwater photographs or underwater videos such as the one below.

With excellent light and clear waters you will be able to get some excellent shots.

This brief video was taken at Conch Reef and you can see the fantastic richness of the marine life and growth on this rich area of reef, and you get an idea of what to expect diving off the Florida coast.
