Aquanaut

(Western Dry Rocks)

Located at Western Dry Rocks sunk in 75ft of crystal clear water is the tug known as the Aquanaut

The first thing you notice when diving in Key West at dive sites like Western Sambo is how clear the water is. This is due to the coral reef lying close to the Gulf Stream which washes the area clean.

As you dive down deeper about ½ mile south of Western Sambo you will discover the 55ft long wooden hull of the tug sitting upright on the bottom where it has sat since 1967.

The area in and around the tug, which remains in excellent condition, is home to a variety of marine life such as crabs, lobsters, angelfish, groupers and snappers

If you are on a scuba diving trip, you will be warned by the dive crew about penetrating the wreck as there are numerous loose wires and other equipment in which you may become entangled.

Key West has some very popular dive sites and many have been photographed. Scuba diving videos are probably the most popular method of recording dives and this video shows the devastation that can happen to marine life.

This video was taken at Western Dry Rocks back in 1997 (Press the button second right on the bottom of the video player to see it in full screen)...

Terence’s Log

I took a scuba diving trip to the Aquanaut and was surprised at how clear the water was and there was a surprising amount of marine life around the wreck.

My only regret on this dive was not having my camera as there were numerous opportunities to take up close photos. Never mind, that will teach me to carry the camera on every scuba diving trip!
