Fire Coral Cave

Molasses Reef scuba diving tours may take you to Fire Coral Cave. Located on Molasses Reef southwest of Spanish Anchor, this dive site is made up of some small caves within the coral reef.

The name of the dive site 'Fire Coral Cave' suggests an abundance of Fire Coral, sadly that's not so.

Also Fire Corals are not true corals and although they have bright yellow-green and brown skeletal coverings they are actually closer related to stinging anemones or jellyfish.

On these scuba diving tours you will find dog snappers, schoolmasters and Spadefish as you swim through the overhangs and caverns created by the reef.

The shallow areas of Molasses Reef are adorned with Elkhorn and Boulder Corals, whilst the depths are adorned with Star Coral and large Brain Coral. There is also a selection of soft corals, sea fans and some beautiful sponges.

The marine life is friendly and spectacular. On these scuba diving tours, the moment you leave the boat you will be surrounded with fish and with plenty of mini caves, nooks, crannies and ledges; lobsters, crabs and other crustaceans also thrive in the area.

The fish are amazing with rays, angelfish, parrot fish, moray eels, grouper snapper, yellowtail, turtles, sharks, need I go on….

I enjoyed swimming through the caverns and there were plenty of fish to keep me company.

One word of caution, even though there is not an abundance of Fire Coral, they can still sting!

So take care.

One of the attractions of Florida Key scuba diving is that you will be able to take underwater photographs or underwater videos such as the one below. With excellent light and clear waters you will be able to get some excellent shots.

This video was taken at Fire Coral Cave and gives you an idea of what to expect diving off the Florida coast (Press the button second right on the bottom of the video player to see it in full screen)...
