Mike's Wreck

Located 100m east of Elbow Reef 36ft light tower. The wreck is an unknown steel barge vessel named after the person who found her.

A large section of the bow and stern have become overgrown so not much of this wreck is left visible. The rest of the area is covered with scattered pieces of pipe-work which have now become home to some colorful inhabitants.

With shallow, clear blue waters this is a prime site to take those underwater photographs. With a maximum depth of 8m (25 feet) and an abundance of corals such as elkhorn, brain, star coral and sea fans protruding from the wreck, this is a photographer's delight with various small fish adorning the corals.

If you are on a scuba diving tour, Florida, you will find this site like others in the vicinity is popular for night diving and snorkeling.

An excellent scuba diving tour to Mike's Wreck.

The coral was fabulous, and even though there was plenty of parrot fish, barracuda, grunts, nurse sharks and rays, I was more fascinated with the little gobies adorning the brain coral.

I must admit though that the sight of one of my cousins a large sea turtle swimming lazily by had all our pulses racing.

One of the attractions of Florida Key scuba diving is that you will be able to take underwater photographs or underwater videos such as the one below. With excellent light and clear waters you will be able to get some excellent shots.

This video was taken at Mike's Wreck and it gives you an idea of what to expect diving off the Florida coast (Press the button second right on the bottom of the video player to see it in full screen)...
