Horseshoe Reef

Horseshoe reef is located nearer the shore between Elbow Reef and Dry Rocks. At the northern part of the reef there is a U shaped sandy hole, hence the name of this otherwise long straight reef.

Be aware that its closeness to the shore can present visibility problems if the weather has been poor, so check before you go scuba diving, snorkeling or any other activity in the area or you may be disappointed.

If the weather and currents have been favorable then as a snorkeling experience this must rank as one of the best.

Horseshoe Reef is relatively too shallow for effective scuba diving. Snorkeling is the main event here with a healthy reef full of stunning fish and coral, with star corals.

Elkhorn coral and large boulders together with pieces of volcanic rock providing an exciting habitat for exotic fish.

Terence's Log

Not much I can say about this dive except it was absolutely fabulous snorkeling amongst so many cousins!

An amazing snorkeling site!

One of the attractions of Florida Key scuba diving is that you will be able to take underwater photographs or underwater videos such as the one below. With excellent light and clear waters you will be able to get some excellent shots.

This video was taken at Horseshoe Reef and it gives you an idea of what to expect diving off the Florida coast (Press the button second right on the bottom of the video player to see it in full screen)...
