Used Equipment

If you are purchasing your scuba diving gear from a good friend or if the seller is well known to you or your local scuba club then purchasing the used equipment will pose little threat if the scuba diving gear has been maintained correctly.

For instance if you are purchasing important scuba gear second hand such as the regulator then you need to check the o-ring is not worn, has the protective cap been clamped into place after each use?

Has the regulator been rinsed with fresh water after each saltwater dive? Have you checked the hoses for signs of bulging or cracks?

All these checks need to be carried out on any purchase before buying the used scuba gear unless it is a simple piece of equipment such as a scuba diving gear bag.

Other critical items such as the BCD or dive tanks need to be checked thoroughly.

If in doubt, purchase new. The risk is not worth the savings as this is your health we are protecting.

A friend of mine purchased a tank and regulator from a source and was 20m down when he realized his throat was tightening and he had run out of air!

He made the appropriate signal to his diving buddy, an experienced club member and they surfaced together.

Upon examining the regulator the pressure gauge was found to be reading wrong, showing air when it had in fact been empty. Needless to say, he went out and bought a new regulator!

Refurbished Scuba Gear

There is a better way for you to purchase diving gear. Scuba gear that has been refurbished by a professional company who renew the gaskets, seals and other joints will usually give you a guarantee and a discount on the new price.

Whatever you decide - be careful and be safe!
