Molasses Reef North

One of Key Largo's scuba diving centers may take you to this reef located 6 miles south east of Key Largo at the southern most point of The National Park Sanctuary.

Molasses Reef is the best known and also the most popular coral reef in Key Largo.

Molasses Reef North has an abundance of large star corals, Elkhorn coral and seafans.

In the shallower parts of the reef you will find the reef alive with fish and the photo opportunities in these crystal clear waters are fantastic.

The remains of an old tower are scattered across many of the sand channels in this area.

Mollases Reef is believed to have been given its name from a barge that sank many years ago carrying a cargo of molasses.

Unfortunately, in 1984 some damage occurred to the reef when a 400ft freighter MV Wellwood collided with the reef and destroyed or damaged several of the large star coral formations.

Restoration work has been ongoing and Molasses Reef continues to be one of the most photographed reefs in the world. With its large star corals, unbelievable amounts of colorful corals, Elkhorn coral, seafans and fish this remains Key Largo's most popular diving site.

Scuba diving centers continue to bring scuba divers out to this most popular of sites and it is still one of the most popular diving sites in the world.

Unbelievable dive. The photo opportunities are endless.

I have never seen so many different fish in one area and the colors were amazing. I'm definitely going to take the underwater photography course now!
