Delta Shoal

If you take a Florida vacation, Marathon dive centers will have this shallow dive site on their list of local dive sites.

Located alongside Sombrero Reef just east of Sombrero lighthouse is Delta Shoals. A shallow dive site spread over 1/2 mile with plenty of coral growths providing nooks and crannies to explore amongst its coral valleys.

Brain, star, and finger corals are prolific here together with soft corals and elkhorn coral reaching up to the snorkelers above.

The shallow site provides novice divers and snorkelers with an interesting area of reef to explore including the remains of some interesting wrecks. In just 15ft of water lies the wreck 'Ivory Coast', so named after the cargo of the slave trader was found to contain 6ft long ivory elephant tusks.

One of the beauties of taking a Florida vacation, Marathon dive centers will bring you to a dive site such as the Delta Shoals where you can have a relaxing dive or snorkel amongst shallow coral reefs, exploring numerous wrecks in the shallow waters and take plenty of underwater photos of the corals and other marine life that thrive here.

Terence's Log

When on a Florida vacation Marathon can be an ideal place to stay and be a good base for shallow dives along the vast reef area stretching from Coffins Patch down to Sombrero Reef

The Delta Shoals didn't disappoint. Even though we didn't find any souvenirs amongst the wrecks, the marine life of corals and colorful fish was gorgeous and provided lots of opportunities for close up photos in the clear shallow waters.
