Snappers Reef
West Palm Beach Dive Sites
Snappers Reef is located just one mile offshore of Palm Beach. This is a shallow reef that has some very interesting formations to explore with a maximum depth of just over 20 feet.
Palm Beach – Reef Diving
Snappers Reef is one of the few shallow reef sites you will find around Palm Beach and is easy to find.
The reef is distinguished by the three large holes that are bowl shaped going down to the sandy bottom. The faces of these bowls are covered in soft and hard corals with colorful soft sponges adding to the colorful background in certain areas of the reef.
The face of the bowls are in fact ledges and the most northern of these holes provides access to a small cavern which whilst not accessible by scuba divers is a great place to find marine life such as nurse sharks or other marine life looking for shelter and a rest.
This is an unassuming dive site with limited appeal during the summer but in the winter that all changes when the large schools of snapper arrive and dominate the reef, hence the name.
West Palm Beach Scuba Videos
One of the attractions of West Palm Beach scuba diving is that you will be able to take underwater photographs or underwater videos such as the one below. With excellent light and clear waters you will be able to get some excellent shots.
This video shows why reef diving is so popular in Palm Beach and if this is not to your liking there is always the numerous shipwrecks. (Press the button second right on the bottom of the video player to see it in full screen)…
Terence’s Log
This is not a site you would put on your list during the summer but it does take on a whole new life during the winter when the snappers arrive.
With the shallow waters at this reef it is a good opportunity for underwater photography and you never know what you will find lurking in the small cavern.
