West Palm Beach Dive Sites

The Sea Emperor is located just over a mile south east of Boca Inlet. This is a very popular dive with the local Palm Beach diving centers as there is much more here than just the wreck.

Palm Beach – Wreck Diving

The Sea Emperor was a hopper barge that was just over 170 foot long and was sunk as part of the Artificial Reef program in 1991.

When the planned sinking took place she was filled with 1500 tons of concrete culverts to create more habitats for the local marine life.

Unfortunately, as she sank, she turned turtle and now lies on the seabed at 65 feet alongside the concrete culverts. These culverts are now home to lobsters, crabs and other crustaceans and many other fascinating creatures.

South-southeast of the Sea Emperor is a limerock boulder corridor that was deployed as part of the program to link the wreck with another shipwreck, the United Caribbean.

All of these culverts and limerock boulders attract hundreds of fish and whilst interesting the real attraction of this dive site is the larger fish you can meet and interact with. You will find that local diving centers will show you how to interact with the stingrays and goliath groupers that frequent this site.

Once you have finished observing the stingrays and goliath groupers you will also note that the area also has hundreds if not thousands of tomtate grunts, yellow goatfish, glass goby, redband parrotfish, boga bonnetmouth and many more.

West Palm Beach Scuba Videos

One of the attractions of West Palm Beach scuba diving is that you will be able to take underwater photographs or underwater videos such as the one below. With excellent light and clear waters you will be able to get some excellent shots.

This video shows why this dive is a favorite with Palm Beach dive centers, where else could you interact with stingrays and goliath groupers in this manner, no wonder it is so popular! (Press the button second right on the bottom of the video player to see it in full screen)…

Take a look at the video and you will see why this is a must dive if you are in Palm Beach scuba diving. This is one of those must do experiences.

There is so much variety at this site with the larger fish and there are thousands of other fish which populate this area such as tomtates, grunts, parrotfish and of course no wreck would be complete without moray eels.
