West Palm Beach Dive Sites

Where else in the world can you dive and find a Rolls Royce? One of the most unusual wrecks you will ever come across and part of Artificial Reef Number 2 in West Palm Beach. (Photo courtesy of Palm Beach County)

West Palm Beach – Reef Diving

Only in Palm Beach would you find someone willing to donate one of the most expensive and readily recognized cars in the world.

This 1967 Silver Shadow valued at the time at over $25000 was donated as part of a publicity stunt to promote the artificial reef program in Palm Beach.

The stunt worked and the Rolls Royce was sunk in 1985 and now sits not far from the Eidsvag or Owens wreck. Over the years divers have removed doors, the bonnet, the silver lady herself and other collectables leaving a coral encrusted shell that has attracted various fish and other forms of marine life such as lobsters.

During a dive at this site you are sure to encounter purple chromis, sergeant major damselfish, grunts (especially tomtate and porkfish), Spanish hogfish, sharpnose puffers and bluehead wrasse.

Palm Beach Scuba Videos

One of the attractions of Palm Beach scuba diving is that you will be able to take underwater photographs or underwater videos such as the one below. With excellent light and clear waters you will be able to get some excellent shots.

This video was taken at the Mizpah not far from the car wreck and gives you an idea of what to expect when scuba diving in West Palm Beach and what to expect diving off the Florida coast. (Press the button second right on the bottom of the video player to see it in full screen)…

TerenceTerence’s Log

I know Palm Beach is a well known and affluent area but a Silver Shadow as a diving wreck is a bit much! Seriously though, as part of this group of wrecks known as Artificial Reef Site Number 2 it’s certainly a talking point and a great photo opportunity for those unusual scuba photos.

This wreck has been well written about in various scuba diving publications and is definitely one of the most expensive for it’s size!
