Horseshoe Reef Palm Beach
Horseshoe Reef
West Palm Beach Dive Sites
Horseshoe Reef or Horseshoe ledge as it is also known is located off Central County a full ten miles from Palm Beach Inlet. The reef derives its name from the shape on the western side of the reef which arcs in the shape of a Horseshoe.
Palm Beach – Wreck Diving
This is a quiet dive site but is still very suitable for divers of all levels. One of the disadvantages of Horseshoe Reef is that it is quite close to the shore resulting in days of poor visibility which can result in a disappointing dive.
However, when the weather is favourable this is a great dive site with interesting marine life. The seabed is at sixty foot here and the ledge is up to fifteen feet high with plenty of sheltered areas for marine life to hide from predators.
The ledge is covered in soft corals and sponges and it is very common to see turtles, spiny lobsters and moray eels hiding under and in the ledge.
This can be an easy and rewarding dive if the weather conditions are suitable.
West Palm Beach Scuba Videos
One of the attractions of West Palm Beach scuba diving is that you will be able to take underwater photographs or underwater videos such as the one below. With excellent light and clear waters you will be able to get some excellent shots.
This video shows you a turtle on Horseshoe Reef and you can expect to see plenty of turtles and lobsters around this reef. You can see the abundant and rich marine life you find at most dive sites off the Florida coast. (Press the button second right on the bottom of the video player to see it in full screen)…
Terence’s Log
This is a quiet dive site located about 1 mile northeast of Lake Worth Pier. During the summer you are virtually guarantted to come across logerhead and hawksbill turtles that love to get under the ledge formation.
If you do encounter the turtles on your dive remember that these are protected so take care when in their vicinity.
