West Palm Beach – Wreck Diving

The Eidsvag later called Owens was built in 1941and was eventually caught being used as a drug ship by the Coastguard.

This was a steel hulled 125 foot freighter that was given and sunk as part of the program in 1985 and rests on the seabed at a depth of 80 feet.

Over the years the various storms that have hit the region have taken their toll and the stern was eventually torn away and now lies on its port side.

This wreck is now in three pieces with the bow upright and next to the barge which is just south of this section. The amidships has taken a battering and collapsed into the hull all of which has created a haven for the local marine life.

Some of the fish you will encounter at this site include Bermuda chub, damselfish, spotted goatfish, grunts (especially French and porkfish),  gray snappers and bluehead wrasse. These are just some of the many fish found regularly at this site.

West Palm Beach Scuba Videos

One of the attractions of West Palm Beach scuba diving is that you will be able to take underwater photographs or underwater videos such as the one below. With excellent light and clear waters you will be able to get some excellent shots.

This video was taken at West Palm Beach and it gives you an idea of what to expect when diving the numerous wrecks around West Palm Beach and what to expect diving off the Florida coast. (Press the button second right on the bottom of the video player to see it in full screen)…

TerenceTerence’s Log

This wreck provides plenty of opportunities for penetration and exploration for the experienced divers as the wreck has holes in its hull where the charges exploded during its sinking.

You will find that the wreck already have plenty of algae growth decorated with soft corals and gorgonians and there is plenty of marine life around this dive site. You may also encounter some nurse sharks as they like to frequent this dive site.
As you dive this wreck you will be able to see two other sites of interest the Rolls Royce and Murphy’s Barge.
