West Palm Beach Dive Sites
What a fantastic place to uncover the marine riches this area provides. Breakers Reef is a stunning stretch of reef that derives its name from the well known beach front resort Breakers Hotel that overlooks this beautiful reef.
West Palm Beach – Reef Diving
Breakers Reef is heavily favoured by Palm Beach dive centers and is one of the most popular reefs dived out of Palm Beach. Nearly 2 miles long and running north to south there is plenty to explore and see.
The reef is so large that it is really split into separate dive areas known as Breakers Shallow, King Neptune, Fourth Window, Outfall Trench and Breakers South.
Breakers Shallow is very popular with Palm Beach dive centers for training purposes because the shallow waters enable instructors to take students on their first dives in an area where there are no currents but plenty of juvenile fish and crustaceans.
King Neptune is a ledge running north to south in 60 feet of water and is reached 45 feet from the surface. Previously there had been a 7 foot statue of King Neptune located in this area but it has now disappeared. The area is stunning with soft corals and sea fans.
Fourth Window is so named because to locate this fabulous part of Breakers Reef you have to line up the black chimney with the 4th window of the Breakers Hotel. This is a very popular part of the reef that is used by most diving centers in Palm Beach. The ledge is covered with growth and sea fans and it is here you will often find nurse sharks and moray eels.
Outfall Trench was created when a 30 foot trench was cut through the reef to lay a cable and runs east to west across the reef. The digging of the trench created a debris trail across the reef and this has become home to a vast array of marine life and is a great place to explore.
Breakers South is an area where the sand and reef start breaking up so the reef starts to lose its definition here. However, because of the broken up area and sandy patches provide a wealth of nooks and crannies this area is popular with lobsters and other marine life that like shelter.
