Maimi Dive Sites

The Tortuga is yet another artificial reef site on Miami’s long list of historical and unusual wrecks. This particular wreck was a planned sinking by a movie company and DERM (Department of Environmental Resources Management.

Miami Wreck Diving – Tortuga

As part of a dramatic ending to the movie Fair Game, the two stars, Cindy Crawford and William Baldwin, narrowly escape from the blown ship.

After careful planning the scene was filmed in April 1995 at the Pflueger Reef Site and upon its sinking the wreck became part of the artificial reef program.

You may not have seen the film as it did not perform as well as hoped but fortunately for you the resulting wreck was a great success!

The 165 foot steel hulled Tortuga is sat upright on the sea floor at a depth of just over 100 feet and you will find that the exposed twin props make dramatic underwater photos. You will need to be an advanced diver and is considered by many to be the best wreck for penetration in Miami.

The wreck itself has developed plenty of growth with Miami marine life establishing itself over the structure providing yet another habitat for fish and crustaceans.

Miami Scuba Videos

One of the attractions of Miami scuba diving is that you will be able to take underwater photographs or underwater videos such as the one below. With excellent light and clear waters you will be able to get some excellent shots.

This short video was taken at Tenneco Oil Platforms showing you what you can expect to see in and around Miami including the marine life and the various colors of the corals and marine life growing on these wrecks. TerenceTerence’s Log

You’ve got to love this place, Miami I mean, where else would you be able to dive a wreck created straight from a film set!

You will love this dive if only to be seen on an original film set. Make sure you take that photo!
