Radio Tower Pyramids
Maimi Dive Sites
The diving site known as Radio Tower Pyramids is also known as Antenna Reef and Ben’s Antenna Reef. The nineteen radio antennas where constructed of steel and concrete and it was Ben Mastkoff who is a former director of DERM (Diving Equipment and Marketing Association) who came up with the great idea of using these construction as an additional artificial reef in Miami.
Miami Artificial Reefs – Radio Tower Pyramids
The 20 foot high ‘pyramids’ and surrounding rubble have become a haven for juvenile fish and other forms of marine life that live amongst the steel and concrete. The size and shapes of these antennas has created protection against the currents and provided scuba divers with a unique development for practicing navigation.
Miami scuba diving centers find this site an excellent place to teach and practice all forms of navigation and with other sites such as Miss Karlene and the Patricia nearby there are opportunities to practice navigation and explore wrecks in the same area.
This is one of the many artificial reef sites that Miami-Dade County continue to encourage and support as Miami rapidly becomes a scuba diving haven especially for novice scuba divers who have many opportunities to explore wrecks in relatively shallow waters.
Scuba Videos
One of the attractions of Miami scuba diving is that you will be able to take underwater photographs or underwater videos such as the one below. With excellent light and clear waters you will be able to get some excellent shots.
This video was not taken at Radio Tower Pyramids but it was taken in Key Biscayne at a similar structure Tennecco Oil Platforms where you can see the marine life and the fantastic colors of the corals growing on these wrecks. (Press the button second right on the bottom of the video player to see it in full screen)…
Terence’s Log
You will enjoy visiting this wrecksite as part of the Wreck Trek. The structures have invited many of Miami’s local marine life to take up residence amongst the structures and there are juvenile fish everywhere using the structures for cover and protection.
Not very pretty as a backround for underwater photos but a great spot to see plenty of fish.
