Coffins Patch
Planning scuba vacation packages to the Florida Keys. Marathon scuba diving centers will want to include this easy dive in your scuba diving tour.
Located just 41/2 miles from Marathon, Coffins Patch is an area of six distinct patch reefs and with depths of 15-30ft is an ideal dive for novices.
Each of the six patches of coral are uniquely identified by their respective coral growths, Pillar Coral Patch is dominated by growths of the rare pillar coral, presenting a stunning sight to scuba divers and snorkelers alike. Here can be found 20ft corals along with the pillar corals. Other ‘patches’ of reef are dominated by star or convoluted brain coral.
The coral formations are stunning to look at with elkorn coral reaching up to the snorkelers not far above.
If you arrive here as part of scuba vacation packages, the local dive centers will inform you that the reef system was named Coffins Patch after a ship sank here laden with a cargo of coffins although there is no evidence of the ship or its lost cargo.
Marine life is abundant with angelfish, grunts, and snappers to name but a few.

I dived here after we had spent the morning at Thunderbolt Wreck as part of our scuba vacation.
There were some very large fish in the area and just about every species of angelfish that I knew.
The coral formations are a must see and the brain coral we came across were huge. This is one fabulous coral reef with fantastic coral formations and a must dive.
