Lowrance Wreck
Lowrance Wreck
Fort Lauderdale Dive Sites
The Lowrance wreck is one of the largest artificial reefs located off the east coast of Florida. Built in Canada in 1953 this once fine freighter is now located not far from the wreck of the Renegade.
Fort Lauderdale – Wreck Diving
The Lowrance wreck is the remains of the freighter that was launched in Canada as the Ciudad De Cali and was later renamed Rio Amazonas.
She was later renamed yet again as the Mazon which was simply a matter of painting out the rest of the original name. The Mazon as she came to be known was a 420 foot long 55 foot beamed freighter that unfortunately in the early 1980′s had a breakdown and was left at Port Everglades.
Three years later in 1984, after being renamed the Lowrance after the stripping and sinking was sponsored by a company, the vessel was finally sunk in just over 200 feet of water. She landed on the seabed and sits upright so that the structure is reached at a depth of 130 feet from the surface and is pointing to the east.
This is a deep dive and only suitable for experienced and technical divers. At 420 foot long the wreck is huge and there is plenty to explore and most divers will investigate the large cargo holds and passageways. The wreck is also a well known fishing spot so take of the fishing lines snagged on the wreck.
There is the usual variety of marine life in and around this wreck with the barracudas top of my favorite list yet again.
Fort Lauderdale Scuba Videos
One of the attractions of Fort Lauderdale scuba diving is that you will be able to take underwater photographs or underwater videos such as the one below. The waters are warm and clear so you will be able to get some good shots.
This video was taken at the Lowrance Wreck and it gives you an idea of what to expect when scuba diving here. As you can see the wreck is full of growth and there is plenty of marine life. (Press the button second right on the bottom of the video player to see it in full screen)…
Terence’s Log
This is a massive wreck. Most of the superstructure was removed before sinking and the wreck has great penetration including areas such as the cargo hold.
At this depth this is a technical dive for experienced divers only and for those divers eligible it is a good dive with moderate currents.
