Fort Lauderdale Dive Sites

Lighthouse Ledge is one of the most popular drift dives with the local Fort Lauderdale dive centers and can be found off Pompano Beach not far from Hillsboro Inlet.

Fort Lauderdale – Reef Diving

Lighthouse Ledge is very popular with the local diving centers as it makes a great back-up should the local conditions be too rough and they are looking for a good replacement dive. The funny thing is this is probably one of the best drift dives in this area with some of the best corals you are likely to see.

The reef itself is at a depth of 40 to 60 feet and the northern part of the reef is covered is some of the most gorgeous soft corals that are huge and full of color. The marine life in this sheltered spot is amazing and vibrant and makes this drift dive worthwhile. With the nooks and crannies provided by the reef you will find plenty of lobsters and some of the fish you will see will be hogfish, snappers, damsels, angelfish and many more.

The currents here can be strong so it is not unusual that you will be able to drift dive a full 2 to 3 miles along this reef and see plenty of corals and fish. Depending on conditions this can be one of the best drift dives off the east coast.

Fort Lauderdale Scuba Videos

One of the attractions of Fort Lauderdale scuba diving is that you will be able to take underwater photographs or underwater videos such as the one below. The waters are warm and clear so you will be able to get some good shots.

This video was taken at Lighthouse Ledge and Sunkist Reef and it gives you an idea of what to expect when scuba diving here. As you can see there are great formations and plenty of marine life. (Press the button second right on the bottom of the video player to see it in full screen)…

TerenceTerence’s Log

This is what you would call a high activity site with snorkelers and boats everywhere. As a result this reef is best dived during the winter months when it is quieter and the waters are clearer. If you dive here ensure you read the tide tables.

There is good marine life throughout this reef and expect to come across some friends of mine … turtles. As the video above shows they are very popular here.
