Fort Lauderdale Dive Sites
If you are looking to go beach diving then Lauderdale-By-The-Sea is the place to head for especially during the winter months.
Fort Lauderdale – Reef Diving
Lauderdale-By-The-Sea is a one mile stretch of beach that is well known for its reef line just 100 meters from the shore.
This is the first of the three reef lines that run up and down the coast north to south and here the reef line is in 30 foot of water. This is one of Fort Lauderdale’s reefs that is accessible by snorkelers and can therefore be very busy.
The reef is full of a variety of corals, sea fans and sponges all making a great area to explore and provide a habitat for the marine life. The length of the reef varies in height anywhere from 4 to 8 feet providing plenty of reef to examine. When exploring this reef you are likely to come across spiny lobsters, angelfish, damsels, groupers and many more different types of fish.
With this being a beach dive you need to take extra precautions, no-one is allowed to dive within 100 meters to the north or south of the pier (applies to all Florida piers) and if you are not diving with a local dive center ensure your diving spot is marked clearly for the other boats to see.
Fort Lauderdale Scuba Videos
One of the attractions of Fort Lauderdale scuba diving is that you will be able to take underwater photographs or underwater videos such as the one below. The waters are warm and clear so you will be able to get some good shots.
This video was taken at Lauderdale-By-The-Sea and it gives you an idea of what to expect when scuba diving here. Being accessible from the beach this is a very busy reef but it gives you an idea of what to expect diving off the Florida coast. Terence’s Log
This is what you would call a high activity site with snorkelers and boats everywhere. As a result this reef is best dived during the winter months when it is quieter and the waters are clearer. If you dive here ensure you read the tide tables.
There is good marine life throughout this reef and expect to come across some friends of mine … turtles. As the video above shows they are very popular here.
