Fort Lauderdale Diving Sites

Bill BoydBill Boyd Reef is one of the reefs created as part of the Broward County Artificial Reef program and is one of the deepest dives in Florida.

Fort Lauderdale – Wreck Diving

The Bill Boyd was a German freighter that was built in Hamburg in 1964 and originally launched under the name Heino.

During her working life she travelled under various names until her final voyage at which time she was known as the Nata.

This 211 foot freighter had one final renaming before she was to be sunk to create an artificial reef and was duly named after Bill Boyd who was a pioneer in sports fishing. The ship was towed out to its present location and sunk in July 1986.

In fact the wreck is used more as a location for fishing than scuba diving as it mow sits in 265 feet of water reaching up 70 foot from the bottom making this a very deep dive and she is therefore rarely dived.

Fort Lauderdale Scuba Videos

One of the attractions of Fort Lauderdale scuba diving is that you will be able to take underwater photographs or underwater videos such as the one below. The waters are warm and clear so you will be able to get some good shots.

This video was taken at the wreck known as the Ancient Mariner, a much shallower wreck, and gives you an idea of what to expect when scuba diving in Fort Lauderdale. (Press the button second right on the bottom of the video player to see it in full screen)...

Bill Boyd - TerenceTerence’s Log

This wreck is rarely if ever dived due to the depth and location and has proved difficult to find when it has been dived.

The sunken wreck is better known for its fishing location and records such as the world record mutton snapper caught here back in 1988.
