Fort Lauderdale – Reef Diving

There are three reef shelves running in this area inner, middle and outer reef formations and Barracuda Reef is one of the middle reefs.

This reef starts on the sandy floor at a depth of 35 foot and the reef reaches up 15 foot towards the surface. On the inside of this reef there are ledges that rise by up to four feet from the sand floor, this has created nooks and crannies and other hiding places for marine life such as lobster, crabs and moray eels.

The top of the reef is covered in various corals such as staghorn, brain and star corals whilst there is also a colorful display of soft sponges.

This reef is in close to the shore and is a very popular site so care has to be taken when diving here due to the number of boats in the immediate area. Mooring buoys have been installed to help solve the problem.

Barracuda Reef - TerenceTerence’s Log:

Barracuda Reef will give you the opportunity to get the camera out. At only 20 foot from the surface the top of the reef is colourful and easy to photograph.

There are plenty of corals and sponges and if you explore under the ledge on the inner side of the reef you are sure to find something very interesting to video or photograph.
