BULL SHARK

Order - Carcharhiniformes
Family - Carcharhinidae
Genus - Carcharhinus
Species - leucas

This shark received its name from its bull like build and temperament, with an unpredictable and aggressive behavior at times.

Easily recognizable with its bulky shape, broad snout, grey-blue top and white underbelly this is one shark you must respect.

Growth

The first thing any scuba diver will notice when face to face with one of these creatures is that they are broad and stout. The average size of a male adult is around 7ft with the females being the larger of the species and reaching lengths of 11ft or more.

Whilst males only weigh 200lb females can reach 700lb and this broad creature carries a lot of weight on a short body giving the bull like shape.

Habitat

These sharks have a great tolerance for fresh water and it is therefore not unusual to find them traveling up rivers in the warm shallow waters.

It is because they enjoy warm shallow waters such as coral reefs and river beds and their aggressive behavior that this shark is responsible for more attacks inshore than any other shark since their need for a warm shallow habitat puts them in the same waters as scuba divers and swimmers.

Behavior

Like most bulls on land, this shark is a solitary creature that enjoys cruising in the shallows inshore or up rivers guarding their territory which they protect fiercely.

Once prey is spotted they can move rapidly and are very aggressive. This is one species you do not want to provoke as it has been responsible for numerous attacks and fatalities over the years.

Eating Habits

Anything!

Their diet includes most fish, other sharks, rays, crustaceans, turtles, and more. Basically if it can be attacked and eaten then this shark will eat it.

Bull Shark Photos and Videos

There are many bull shark photos and videos available on the web which proves that not all scuba divers are attacked when in the water near these amazing creatures!

This is one of my favorite videos: (press the button second right on the bottom of the video player to see it in full screen)...

Bull Shark Attacks

So having read and watched the above video ... what are your chances of being attacked whilst scuba diving in Florida?

You have an equal chance of being hit by lightening or being attacked by one of these sharks in Florida.

And a 50 times greater chance of being hit by lightening than being involved in a fatal attack by one of these sharks.

So relax and enjoy your scuba diving!
