Terence’s Tip

It is unlikely you will come across a Blue shark in the temperate waters around the coast of Florida and it is more likely that you will see them at one of the local boat charter docking bays after a days fishing.

If you are on a deep scuba dive in cooler waters at one of the deeper wrecks you may see one of these majestic creatures.

They tend to be non aggressive and there should be little threat from this shark unless provoked.

BLUE SHARK

Order – Carcharhiniformes
Family - Carcharhinidae
Genus - Prionace
Speciesglauca

You are unlikely to see many of these sharks close inshore as it prefers much cooler waters and therefore needs the deeper open areas off the Florida coast.

They are readily identified by their long slender bodies, blue on top with a white underbelly. The head houses a large eye and a long conical shaped snout. Other distinctive features are the long pectoral fins which are pointed and the tail with its long ventral lobe.

Blue Shark Growth

The average size of an adult is around 9-12ft which the males reach after 4-5 years and the females 5-6 years. With an average weight of 300-400lbs at adulthood the expected life span is 20yrs.

Habitat

This shark is rarely found inshore as this shark is a true pelagic species and prefers the cooler deeper waters.

Scuba diving around the coast of Florida you will rarely come across this species due to the inshore water temperatures but if you book a fishing charter this is likely one of the sharks you would fish for around Florida.

Behaviour

This shark generally moves through the water in a slow lethargic fashion but is also capable of moving rapidly if the need arises, and whilst they may move slowly they cover vast distances when they migrate.

This is not known as an aggressive shark but it should still be treated with respect as it is not a shy creature either and has been known to circle scuba divers or groups of swimmers and may approach closer to try an exploritory bite!

Eating Habits

These sharks have a diet predominately made up of small fishes, sardines, herring etc and love squid and cuttlefish.

They will also explore around fishermen’s nets looking for any opportunity for an easy meal left lying around and have been known to become aggressive because the food is in short supply.
