The Best Scuba Diving Locations in the World ... Christ of the Abyss

Planning to go to one of the best scuba diving locations in Florida? Then look no further... Christ of the Abyss is one of those unique dives that give you the opportunity to see one of the world's best known statues.

Christ of the Abyss Statue

This is one of Key Largo's best scuba dive locations and certainly one of the most popular dive sites around Florida.

Located 6 miles east north east of Key Largo is the 4000lbs statue "Christ of the Abyss"

Donated by Egidi Cressi in 1962 to the Underwater Society of America, the statue was sunk on its concrete base in just 22 feet of water on the seaward side of the reef.

The statue presents an awesome sight with its hands raised towards the surface. With the clear shallow waters the statue is easily seen by anyone snorkeling and there are lots of snorkelers!

One of the best scuba diving locations in Key Largo, probably the most photographed and with over 200 weddings performed in front of the sculpture of Christ certainly one of the most interesting.

The statue itself is nearly 9 feet tall and with its religious overtones is always one of the busiest sites.

The area has some interesting brain coral and other coral formations and one local inhabitant still cruises the area, Smoky the barracuda. He seems to have lived here forever and is totally domesticated.

He also has plenty of guests in the form of groupers, snappers, spotted eagle rays, stingrays, puffer fish, etc

Although I found the site to be very busy it was still an awesome sight that grew in stature as you swam closer.

Key Largo is known as 'the diving capital of the world' and for good reason. There are numerous dive sites easily accessible and suitable for all abilities.

So if you're a novice just looking for one of the best scuba dive locations or wanting to improve to Padi Advanced, or maybe you fancy a wreck dive at the many wreck dive sites available.

Whatever you experience you will find that Key Largo has some of the best scuba diving locations.

Christ of the Abyss is a very popular and busy dive site. I never tire of visiting this site which has some stunning marine life as well as the main focal point ... the statue.
